How One Introvert Used Recroot to Negotiate a 24% Salary Increase

Many professionals assume salary negotiations are won by the loudest, most aggressive, or most confident people in the room. In reality, they are usually won by the people who simply prepare the best.

Recently, one Recroot user—a senior technology professional with over 8 years of experience—shared his story with us. He described himself as an introvert. He consistently delivered great results, led projects, and took on extra responsibilities beyond his role. Yet, every single time he thought about asking his boss for a pay raise, he hesitated.

His biggest fears were:

  • What if they say no?
  • What if I sound too demanding?
  • What if I freeze or can’t answer their questions during the conversation?
  • What if my manager challenges my examples?

Instead of going into the discussion completely unprepared and hoping for the best, he spent several weeks practicing in private with Recroot.

How Recroot Prepared Him

Rather than simply giving him generic blog advice to read, Recroot allowed him to simulate realistic conversations with an AI manager out loud.

First, the app asked him to input his background: his role, years of experience, recent achievements, projects delivered, extra responsibilities, and his exact salary expectations.

Based on this information, Recroot generated highly personalized negotiation scenarios. The AI manager challenged him with realistic, tough questions such as:

  • Why do you believe you deserve a salary increase right now?
  • What specific business outcomes have you delivered?
  • How have you gone above your current role expectations?
  • Why should we increase your salary when company budgets are currently tight?
  • What would you do if we can only offer a smaller increase right now?
  • How does your performance compare to others on the team?

Each session felt like a real, stressful discussion rather than a scripted interview.

Changing the Script

After every practice conversation, Recroot provided detailed feedback on his confidence, delivery, clarity of communication, and areas where he sounded uncertain.

One of the biggest improvements came from helping him change his phrasing. Recroot taught him to move away from talking about “effort” and start talking about “outcomes.”

His initial, unpracticed response sounded like:

“I’ve worked really hard this year and taken on a lot of extra work.”

After several practice sessions with the AI, his response became:

*”Over the last 12 months, I’ve led three major initiatives, reduced delivery delays, improved stakeholder satisfaction, and taken on responsibilities beyond my current role. These contributions have created measurable value for the business, and I’d like to discuss aligning my compensation with that impact.”
*
Recroot also helped him practice difficult pushback questions repeatedly until he could answer them confidently without freezing up or sounding defensive. By the time he had the real conversation, he had already rehearsed dozens of likely scenarios in his living room.

The Outcome

A few weeks later, he finally met with his real manager. The result? A 24% salary increase.

The most interesting part of this case study is that he did not suddenly become an extrovert. He didn’t learn sneaky negotiation tricks or memorize a robotic script. He simply practiced the conversation enough times that he knew exactly what to say, how to say it, and how to stay calm when challenged.

That is what many professionals underestimate about career growth. It is often not a lack of skills holding people back. It is simply a lack of practice in the conversations that matter.
